In 2009, three million households faced foreclosure. Shortly after President Obama took office in 2009, he was forced to act on this growing housing crisis. His solution to the housing crisis costs billions of dollars. This Note proposes a different solution. Instead of throwing money at the problem, which promises to only grow as its secondary effects are felt in the rental market, this Note advocates for changing Michigan eviction law for nonpayment of rent toward a more pro-landlord position through the creation of a new government agency. This governmental agency will handle the leasing process and eviction for nonpayment of rent in order to entice landlords to enter the rental market.
